Another tragic case of asbestos-related disease further brings to light the need for services such as asbestos surveying. This case takes place in Knottingley, not far from Wakefield in West Yorkshire.
David Clegg died in February of this year, just a week after being diagnosed with mesothelioma – an aggressive form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure.
Such a short time between diagnosis and death is sadly common amongst mesothelioma victims, and is one of the things that sets this lethal disease apart from other forms of cancer. It can take years – more often than not decades – to begin showing obvious symptoms, by which time, it is often too late for the cancer to be treated successfully, hence the harrowing death rate.
Widow seeks information about late husband’s exposure
David’s widow, Susan, is now striving to discover just how her husband came into contact with the deadly material.
Mr Clegg worked at Pollards Bearings factory for two months while at university in the 1970s. After that, he worked as a teacher at a nearby grammar school (1979-1980) and a high school (1980-2000).
It is thought most likely to be the factory setting where the asbestos exposure occurred; Mr Clegg had described scraping out a fibrous material from the inside of furnaces while at Pollards Bearings – a material he believed to be asbestos. However, his family also have concerns that asbestos exposure could have occurred in the classrooms at the two schools.
Susan is now appealing for former colleagues to come forward with any information that may help her and lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to discover the circumstances behind her husband’s death.
Ian Toft, head of the industrial disease team at Irwin Mitchell’s Leeds office, stated that “It’s important that we now help Susan and her family get answers about his exposure to the deadly dust… Sadly, many employers did not do enough to manage the risks of asbestos exposure, despite knowing how dangerous it is.”
Susan commented: “David and I were shocked and devastated by the diagnosis. We had no time to come to terms with it. We had made plans for our retirement together and now I am facing that future alone.”
