It’s rare for a week to go by without us hearing of a family stricken with grief due to an asbestos-related death.
To further stress the need for our asbestos surveys and other services here at Salvum, here are just two examples of the despair and devastation that exposure to asbestos can cause.
Our first story concerns a West Yorkshire grandfather, fundraiser and former electrical engineer who sadly succumbed to mesothelioma while on holiday.
Jon Sharpe worked for the Central Electricity Generating Board during the construction of power stations in the 1960s. During this time, he was surrounded by up to 100 workers, who were installing insulating lagging that contained asbestos.
Sharpe died in November 2015 aged 74, at a medical centre in Florida. During his life, he raised over £20,000 for Pontefract’s Prince of Wales Hospice by setting up extravagant light displays outside his home every Christmas for over two decades – an amazing and generous feat.
Our final story takes place in Salvum’s home territory of Essex, where a grieving husband is now working closely with lawyers to investigate the circumstances in which his wife developed – and later died of – mesothelioma.
Tracey Anthony died aged 58, just weeks after being diagnosed with the disease – a common occurrence with this malignant and practically always-terminal cancer.
Her widower, Paul, is now appealing to anyone who worked with her in London, Southend, Benfleet or Purfleet for any information that could help him to pinpoint how she was exposed to the deadly material.
Stories such as these are all too familiar to our asbestos surveying professionals here at Salvum, as are the effects of mesothelioma. This form of cancer attacks the lining of the lungs or stomach, but often doesn’t produce symptoms for decades after the initial exposure.
Such saddening stories continue to highlight the importance of the work of organisations like Salvum in helping to prevent future asbestos-related tragedies. Our services encompass asbestos management surveys, pre-purchase surveys, residential surveys and sampling surveys, in addition to refurbishment and demolition.
