In an all-too-familiar series of events that further emphasises the need for the services of asbestos demolition specialists in the present day, a family has been left devastated after an asbestos-related death.
Barry Ellis – from Pattingham, Staffordshire – was 66 when he died from an asbestos-related disease in March of last year. A coroner ruled his death the result of industrial disease in September of that year.
His family is now working with a legal expert on asbestos claims to establish where Ellis came into contact with the deadly fibrous material during his career.
Looking back over decades for vital information
Ellis worked at several companies during this life. In the late 1960s, he worked as an apprentice fitter for the Ounsdale Road, Wombourne-based Central Plant Limited, performing such duties as the repair of hire equipment and the re-lining and fitting of new brake shoes.
He then worked as an explosive engineer for Swinnerton & Miller, based on Rosehill, Willenhall, this role routinely requiring him to drill through walls and ceilings so that explosives could be placed.
After this, he worked as a driver and factory worker for Wilkins & Mitchell Limited over nearly two decades, before being employed by Global Power Press Limited between 1994 and 2000.
Several of these jobs could have theoretically exposed Barry to asbestos, as it was commonly used as a building material for much of his career. Now, his family is appealing to former colleagues to come forward to help determine how and when he came into contact with the lethal asbestos fibres.
Another life claimed too soon by asbestos
Unfortunately, stories such as these are a frequent occurrence in the media as of late. Many asbestos-related diseases take many years – even decades – to become diagnosable, which means that many of these tragic incidents are only just coming to light now.
